Nida Mehboob was born into a fiercely discriminated religious minority in Pakistan. She has known since childhood that she needs to conceal this part of her identity to avoid verbal violence and discrimination against her and her family She often feels the need for exile and is currently studying documentary film in Finland. " I graduated as a pharmacist but left my field and started pursuing my childhood dream of photography. My position as a woman in Pakistan and belonging to a discriminated minority gives me a deep personal connection and motivation to tell stories", she says.

    A dissident actress in Cuba, a photographer in Pakistan or an Afghan musician exiled in Kyrgyzstan, the people featured in this series of portraits have their lives challenged by their circumstances and the detrimental politics of their countries. In a mental or geographical exile, they all share a strength made of resilience mingled with vulnerability, an urge to live and fight and a peculiar inner world.
